Ameren Missouri urges customers to reconnect natural gas service before temperatures drop

FOX23 News at 9 p.m.

COLUMBIA, Mo. (Oct. 20, 2025) – As colder temperatures approach, Ameren Missouri is reminding customers to reconnect their natural gas service before the first freeze hits.

“Many students and renters may not realize their furnace runs on natural gas until they try to turn on the heat,” said Pam Harrison, senior director of gas operations for Ameren Missouri. “Scheduling your reconnection to natural gas service early ensures you’ll be ready when the cold temperatures set in.”

Unlike most utilities, natural gas service reconnection requires a scheduled visit from Ameren Missouri. A person 18 or older must be present while a technician inspects connections, activates the meter and relights pilot lights. Appointments can fill quickly, and customers are encouraged to call 1-800-552-7583 to schedule a service appointment.

Safety Reminders

Ameren Missouri emphasizes that natural gas is a safe, efficient and clean-burning fuel when used correctly. About half of Missouri households rely on it for heat. The company offers these safety tips:

Know the signs of a leak: A rotten-egg smell, hissing sounds near appliances or bubbles in standing water could indicate a leak.

Act immediately: Leave the area with people and pets, avoid electronics or flames, and call Ameren Missouri at 1-800-552-7583 from a safe distance.

Keep appliances clear: Avoid stacking boxes, papers or other flammable items around furnaces or water heaters.

Never alter safety features: Furnaces, water heaters, ovens and dryers include built-in safety controls. If something seems off, contact a landlord or qualified technician.

Ameren Missouri responds to gas leak calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at no charge. Additional safety information is available at Natural Gas Safety – Ameren.com.
