Ameren Missouri urges safety ahead of Thanksgiving to prevent gas leaks, carbon monoxide poisoning
FOX23 News at 9 p.m.
COLUMBIA, Mo., (KBSI) — As families prepare for Thanksgiving gatherings and colder temperatures, Ameren Missouri is reminding customers to stay alert for natural gas leaks and the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning.
The utility noted that natural gas is a safe and efficient home-heating option but improperly maintained appliances can lead to leaks. Natural gas, which is highly flammable, can be detected by its distinct rotten-egg odor or a hissing sound near appliances.
“If you smell an odor of rotten eggs or hear a hissing sound, leave the area immediately without attempting to ventilate the property,” said Pam Harrison, senior director of gas operations for Ameren Missouri. “From a safe distance upwind, call Ameren Missouri at 1-800-552-7583 and stay away until the area is deemed safe.”
Ameren Missouri is also urging residents to protect their homes against carbon monoxide, a colorless, odorless gas that can build up when fuel-burning appliances are not properly vented. The utility recommends installing carbon monoxide detectors outside each sleeping area and on every level of the home and testing them monthly.
Carbon monoxide poisoning kills hundreds of Americans each year and sends thousands to the hospital. It can result from the improper burning of gasoline, natural gas, propane, kerosene, coal, wood or charcoal.
To reduce the risk of natural gas leaks and carbon monoxide exposure, Ameren Missouri recommends:
Having appliances inspected and repaired by a qualified professional.
Keeping flammable materials away from appliances.
Ensuring furnaces, water heaters and other gas-burning equipment are properly vented.
