Ameren urges customers to clear snow from natural gas meters

COLUMBIA, Mo., (KBSI) — Ameren is reminding customers to clear snow and ice from outdoor natural gas meters and vents following recent snowfall to help ensure safe and reliable service.

The utility said snow and ice buildup can damage equipment and block vents, potentially allowing unsafe levels of natural gas or carbon monoxide to accumulate inside homes. Clearing meters and vents after winter storms helps natural gas systems operate safely during periods of high demand.

“We know winter storms can be stressful, and our customers rely on us to deliver safe, reliable energy in all kinds of weather,” said Pam Harrison, senior director of gas operations at Ameren Missouri. “Taking a few minutes to gently clear snow and ice from meters and vents can make a real difference in keeping homes safe and warm.”

Ameren recommends using hands or a broom to gently remove snow and ice from around natural gas meters and vents. Customers are advised not to use shovels or snowblowers, which can damage equipment or loosen connections. Large icicles hanging above meters or vents should be carefully removed. If a meter is completely encased in ice, customers should allow it to melt naturally rather than attempting to chip or melt the ice.

Anyone who smells natural gas or suspects a leak should leave the area immediately, taking people and pets with them, and call Ameren at 800-552-7583 from a safe location. Ameren responds to natural gas leak calls 24 hours a day at no charge.
