Ameren warns of 4 common electrical hazards

ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) — As spring arrives, homeowners are advised to be mindful of potential electrical safety hazards around the house.

According to Tim Frankenberg, fire safety engineer for Ameren, “A little prevention goes a long way in keeping your family safe.”

Ameren identifies four key electrical safety hazards to avoid this spring:

Electric equipment near water: Keep electric equipment at least 10 feet away from wet areas and use ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs).

Underground utilities: Call 811 at least three business days before digging to have underground utility lines marked.

Overhead power lines: Stay clear of power lines and wires when trimming vegetation or performing outdoor maintenance.

Indoor electrical cords and electronics for outdoors: Ensure cords, lights, or fans are rated for outdoor use and avoid running cords through door or window openings.
