American Red Cross issues urgent call for blood donations amid severe winter weather

KENTUCKY, (KBSI) — The American Red Cross is urging people to donate blood and platelets in February to replenish the blood supply after severe winter weather and wildfires led to the cancellation of hundreds of blood drives and more than 16,000 uncollected donations since the start of the year.

Donors of all blood types, particularly those with type O negative blood, are encouraged to make and keep their donation appointments to ensure hospitals can provide critical care for patients.

The Red Cross warns that additional weather systems and seasonal illnesses like the flu could further disrupt blood drives and donations.

To schedule a donation, use the Red Cross Blood Donor App, call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767). As a token of appreciation, donors between Jan. 27 and Feb. 28 will receive a $15 e-gift card to a merchant of their choice.
