American Red Cross offers free diabetes screening for blood donors in March

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The American Red Cross of Southeast Missouri and Northeast Arkansas is providing free A1C testing for blood donors in March to help bridge the gap in access to health care.

The testing, which screens for diabetes and prediabetes, will be available for all successful blood, platelet and plasma donations.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one-third of people in the U.S. lack access to regular primary care, and nearly a quarter of those living with diabetes are undiagnosed.

Donors can schedule an appointment by visiting RedCrossBlood.org, using the Red Cross Blood Donor App or calling 1-800-RED CROSS.

Those who give blood in March will also receive a $10 redcross.org/GivingDay Gift Card by email.

Additionally, the Red Cross is encouraging financial donations on Red Cross Giving Day, March 26, to support disaster relief efforts.

The free A1C testing is part of the Red Cross’ ongoing efforts to support community health, which also includes disaster relief services such as basic disaster health and mental health services.
