ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) — Animal control officers in St. Louis are searching for several monkeys reported loose in city neighborhoods, prompting concern among residents.
St. Louis Animal Care and Control officers were seen canvassing areas with catch poles after multiple reports of monkey sightings began coming in Thursday afternoon. Officials said callers reported seeing at least one monkey, with some indicating as many as four animals may be loose.
The sightings led to an influx of calls from residents and even law enforcement officers, authorities said.
“I think of danger because that’s a wild animal,” said resident Marva Young, who said she wants the animals removed from her neighborhood. “Look at the fingers and those sharp teeth. He almost looks like an orangutan.”
Officials identified the animals as vervet monkeys, a species native to Africa. City officials said exotic animals are prohibited within St. Louis city limits.
Animal control officers continue efforts to locate and safely capture the monkeys. Residents are advised to avoid approaching the animals and to report sightings to authorities.
