Armed robbery investigation leads to weapons charges, juvenile arrests in Carbondale

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Carbondale police have arrested two juveniles and issued charges against two adults following an armed robbery investigation that led to the discovery of a separate weapons offense earlier this month.

Officers were called to the 500 block of South Illinois Avenue around 5:30 p.m. on Nov. 8 for a reported armed robbery.

During the investigation, police learned of a separate incident involving Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

No injuries were reported.

Police obtained Jackson County arrest warrants for three suspects and a search warrant for a residence in the 600 block of North Bridge Street.

On Nov. 12, at approximately 8:40 a.m., officers executed the arrest and search warrants. Two juveniles were taken into custody on charges of Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon.

New information developed during the warrant service led to one of the previously issued warrants being quashed.

At a subsequent detention hearing, both juveniles were deemed eligible for detention, but Juvenile Probation was unable to locate an available facility.

They were released to family members. Their names will not be released under the Illinois Juvenile Justice Act. A Civic Alert was issued during the operation asking the public to avoid the area.

The investigation remains active.

In the initial phase of the investigation, the victim told police that a group of Black males and females attempted to rob him and that one suspect was armed.

Officers identified two suspects — Jared Gibbs, 18, of Carbondale, and Clayton Maclin, 19, of Carbondale — near the scene and arrested a third suspect, a juvenile, shortly afterward.

Police also recovered a discarded firearm.

Gibbs and Maclin were charged with Aggravated Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Attempted Armed Robbery.

Both were booked into the Jackson County Jail pending a detention hearing.

The juvenile in that case, though eligible for detention, was also released to a family member due to a lack of available juvenile facilities.

Anyone with information is urged to contact the Carbondale Police Department. The investigation is ongoing.
