Benton man arrested after fleeing from Christopher police officer

CHRISTOPHER, Ill., (KBSI) — A 40-year-old Benton man was taken into custody Wednesday after attempting to flee from a Christopher police officer.
At approximately 4:47 p.m., the officer observed Michael S. Newberry walking down the middle of a public roadway near the intersection of Indian Creek Road and Harrison Street. Newberry had several active outstanding warrants out of Franklin and surrounding counties.
When the officer attempted to make contact, Newberry fled into a nearby field and wooded area, prompting a brief foot pursuit. The officer discharged his taser and took Newberry into custody without further incident.
Newberry was cleared by medical personnel on the scene and transported to the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office. He was charged with obstructing or resisting arrest, a Class A misdemeanor.
Newberry is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
