Benton photographer’s work featured on postage stamp

BENTON, Mo. (KBSI) – What started as a simple road trip taking photos turned into a unique opportunity for Larry Braun of Benton, Mo.

A photo he took of the Mississippi River in Wickliffe, Ky. is now featured as part of the United States Postal Service’s Mighty Mississippi collection.

“I just saw that the sky was turning awesome colors,” Braun said. “I knew of this park overlooking the Mississippi River, so when I got close, I just headed over there, got up on the bluffs, set up, and took some pictures.”

Braun picked up photography as a hobby when he was young, but once he retired, it became something to keep him, as he likes to call it, “engaged.”

“I got close to retiring when I was, oh, 60 years old, and decided, you know, I’m going to have to do something when I retire. I can’t just sit around. I need to be active,” he said. “I’m the type of person that needs to be engaged in something, and I found that photography was meaningful to me.”

Braun primarily produces nature and street photographs.

“People grew up in these little towns,. They’d moved away and they see these pictures,” he said. “It just brings back so many good memories growing up in these little towns in our area.”

When it comes to photography, it’s all a matter of perspective.

“People look at a photo and think, that’s that place, and it’s not. It’s just a photo of it,” he said. “We kind of lose track of what reality really is by putting so much faith in photography. It’s just another perspective of that place. So if you want to see what that perspective is, you photograph it.”

The Mighty Mississippi Collection features photographs of all 10 states that Mississippi River touches. The collection is available for purchase at your local post office or online. Tap here to purchase the stamp collection.
