Better Business Bureau offers tips for safe back-to-school shopping
ST. LOUIS, Mo., (KBSI) – As the new school year approaches, parents and guardians are searching for deals on supplies. The Better Business Bureau is warning consumers to be cautious of scams and untrustworthy vendors.
“This is a busy time of year, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed by back-to-school deals and advertising,” said Michelle L. Corey, BBB St. Louis president and CEO. “Planning ahead can help you save money and shop safely.”
To get the best deals on school supplies:
– Make a list and set a budget: Start by “shopping at home” for any supplies left over from last year.
– Research big-ticket items: Compare prices and learn about warranties and return policies before buying expensive items like laptops or tablets.
– Shop sales and tax-free weekends: Keep an eye out for sales, coupons, and rebates from your favorite stores. Missouri’s tax-free weekend for school supplies is August 1-3, 2025.
– Buy in bulk: Consider pooling money with other parents to buy items like tissues or hand sanitizer in bulk.
– Check for student discounts: Many stores offer student or teacher discounts on back-to-school items.
To avoid back-to-school shopping scams:
– Shop safe online: Only shop with retailers you trust and check their BBB Business Profile before making a purchase.
– Be wary of too-good-to-be-true deals: If you see ads for high-demand items at steep discounts, do more research before buying.
– Use a credit card: Paying with a credit card makes it easier to dispute a charge or get your money back if something goes wrong with your purchase.
