Bird watching event for those diagnosed with early Alzheimer’s or Dementia

CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO. (KBSI) – An early birding event for those with Dementia or Alzheimer’s will take place on Saturday.
On Saturday May 11, there will be a bird watching session for those with early-stage Dementia or Alzheimer’s and their care givers.
The event is completely free and a great way to get out of the house.
May is mental health awareness month and Lydia Hess with the Southeast Missouri Alzheimer’s Association says bird watching is a great way to boost mental health. She explains the benefits of bird watching.
“So this helps people with Alzheimer’s and Dementia because first of all its a physical activity. So, bird watching promotes exercise improving blood flow and brain health. It’s also a stress reliever and more of a social interaction to get out in nature and enhances people’s moods.”
Hess says getting outdoors, interacting with nature, and learning new skills have shown to have positive benefits for individuals living with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia.
You can simply just show up to the Nature Center in Cape Girardeau this Saturday at 9am or you can register for the event here.
The session will include tips for using binoculars, ways to identify bird songs and how to use a field guide.
