Black hair care products are now available in the Southeast Bookstore

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI)- The Black Student Union and College Democrats of Southeast Missouri State are honored to announce that Black hair care products are now available in the Southeast Bookstore.

The effort was a labor of love from the Black Caucus of College Democrats and Black Student Union to make our university more accessible and equitable for students of all textures, and ethnic backgrounds.

This action signals a new era of advocacy from the Black population on campus (595 in total)1.

The list of items was compiled by the Black Student Union General Body and the Black Caucus of College Democrats in early April.

It contains a variety of products/accessories that allow for optimal maintenance of natural hair and protective styles.

We are excited to see that the initial order has come in and that more items are on the way to greet students on the shelves in Fall 2024.

“BSU is so excited for there to be an addition of black hair care in the bookstore. It really shows the dedication of the black students and the faculty to make those with ethnic hair feel included here at SEMO.” says Kiaya Thornton, Black Student Union President.

“I would like to thank Dr. Bruce Skinner, as well as the Bookstore Manager for their willingness to work with us in providing these products to the Southeast Community. Hair is an essential part of Black culture, from cornrows being used as escape maps during slavery, to a symbol of cultural pride in the 70s with Afros, to the present day where it is a statement of identity. We are proud to have brought this to campus and support students on their journey of self-discovery.” stated Camille Shoals, College Democrats of Southeast Missouri State Vice President and Black Caucus Chair

A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held on Tuesday, May 7th, at 11 am in front of the Southeast Bookstore.

There will be a small reception in the UC Program Lounge on the Second Floor of the University Center, at 975 Normal Ave, Cape Girardeau, Mo.
