Blue balloons released in memory of New Madrid teen killed in car crash

NEW MADRID COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – A two-vehicle crash that occurred Tuesday afternoon — taking the lives of an off-duty deputy, his two daughters, and a local teenager — is still under investigation.
The family of the 17 year old girl who was killed in the crash held a community event in her honor.
Blue balloons floated up to the heavens Thursday afternoon, in honor of 17 year old Neveah Debose whose favorite color was blue.
Neveah was on her way to work when she was killed in a crash on Highway U, Tuesday afternoon. The driver of the other vehicle, off-duty New Madrid Sheriff’s Deputy Dustin Colbert and his two daughters — ages one year and four years old — were also killed in the crash.
The balloon release in honor of Nevaeh’s memory was held outside Life Changers Restoration Ministries in Lilbourn.
Nevaeh’s younger sister, LaCourtney Smith, talked with FOX23 about her love for her sister.
“I’m sorry that you’re gone and I love you so much,” she said.
Through tears, LaCourtney said her sister did so much for her. She wishes Nevaeh could be here to watch her grow up. She will never be the same without her.
“You will always have my heart,” she said.
New Madrid County Central High School secretary Roshawnda Robinson said Nevaeh was actively involved in serving the community.
“I want people to know that she was a young lady that made a difference,” she said. “That her smile made a difference. Her giggle was contagious. And that she just loved people.”
Nevaeh’s father, Reginald Smith said his years with Nevaeh were joyous — losing her is heartbreaking.
“It’s heartbreaking, you know? And it’s hurtful that she’s gone from us,” he said. “All I can do is be strong for her mom and my other two kids, you know, and I can just — just try to be strong as a dad.”
Smith said he’s grateful for everyone that came out to support them and he extends his love and support to Deputy Colbert’s family, as well.
