Body found near Mississippi River raises safety concerns among local anglers
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — The discovery of a body near the Mississippi River has sparked concern among local residents and outdoor enthusiasts about the safety of fishing, boating and swimming in the area.
On Tuesday, April 22, at approximately 9 a.m., Cape Girardeau police responded to a report of a body found in the water near the Red Star Access Area of the Mississippi River. Upon arrival, officers called for fire personnel to assist in recovering the body.
The deceased was later identified as Shane Barendregt, 52. Authorities have not released details about the cause of death. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday, but as of this report, the Cape Girardeau Police Department has not released the results.
Local fisherman Joshua Stein, a resident of Farmington, Missouri, said the discovery has made him reconsider where he chooses to fish.
“I have fished all over the country and I have never come across a dead body,” Stein said. “I usually stick to quiet towns, but it’s nice traveling to different places. I can’t say whether I would come here again or not. It just doesn’t seem like a safe guarantee anymore.”
Stein said learning about the body being found in an area he frequently visits was unsettling.
“It’s unusual how people go missing and end up being found in weird places with no information on how this happened,” he said. “I pray for his family during times like this and hope that Cape PD can find a clearer understanding of what happened to give the family some form of clarity.”
Fishing and boating are popular pastimes in the region, especially with access to major waterways like the Mississippi River. But for some, the recent incident has raised questions about safety and awareness while enjoying these summer activities.
The investigation is ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with information related to the case to contact the Cape Girardeau Police Department.
