Breaking: First American Pope elected, hails from Chicago

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — History was made today with the selection of a new pope — the first American ever chosen to lead the Roman Catholic Church. Pope Leo XIV, originally from Chicago, Illinois, was elected following the traditional appearance of white smoke from the Sistine Chapel chimney.

Excitement erupted at Notre Dame High School in Cape Girardeau, where students had just completed their final day of classes. Many ran through the halls in celebration after learning the news.

FOX23 spoke with students and staff, who expressed hope and pride in the new pontiff’s American roots.

“We’re thrilled to see someone from our own country rise to such an important role,” one student said. “We believe Pope Leo XIV will bring unity to the Church and lead with compassion and strength.”
