Burglar hits multiple Cape businesses

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – Multiple businesses were broken into during the day in Cape Girardeau.
Multiple area businesses are picking up the pieces after a string of break-ins on Friday April 4, 2026. One of those businesses being Roto-Rooter of Cape Girardeau.
Aaron Stroud is the Roto-Rooter General Manager of Cape Girardeau; he shares that once he arrived at his business after getting a call about a busted door from one of his employees’ officers with the Cape Girardeau police department were already on scene conducting an investigation after his security system alerted the department.
“They were walking through, looking at everything, taking pictures and stuff so I did download a video from our security system, that, you know, showed the intruder come through the front door, you know, rifle through a couple things here, and then, went in my office and grabbed, a couple items out of my drawer” says Stroud.
The intruder was later identified as 22-year-old Dustin Sutliff of Jonesboro, Illinois, and according to the Cape Girardeau police department Sutliff had broken into multiple businesses costing around $3,100 worth of damage.
According to the police report, Sutliff was taken into custody and had what is believed to be methamphetamine in his possession, Stroud says this is the first time something like this has happened at his business and he’s just moving forward.
“This isn’t an everyday occurrence” says Stroder “You know, this is a great community people stick together. They quickly got on top of it, my family came out, rushed out here to help me secure the building and clean up and all that. So, Yeah, as far as how it made me feel, it is what it is.”
