MURRAY, Ky., (KBSI) — The Calloway County Jail announced the death of Captain Michael Hopkins, who passed away Aug. 31 at his home.

Hopkins began his career at the jail in January 2011 and rose through the ranks from deputy jailer to sergeant, lieutenant and, in 2019, captain. He was previously a firefighter and spent much of his life in public service.

“His leadership, guidance and devotion to his job will be deeply missed,” jail officials said in a statement. “The loss of Captain Hopkins is profoundly felt not only by his family, but also by the men and women of the Calloway County Jail who served alongside him every day.”

Hopkins was recognized with the Murray Lion’s Club Deputy Jailer of the Year award in 2022, after being nominated by Jailer Ken Claud. Colleagues remembered him as a mentor to new deputies, seasoned veterans and even incarcerated individuals facing challenges.

The jail also expressed gratitude to Murray-Calloway County Ambulance personnel, Calloway County Fire-Rescue, Murray Police Department, county 911 dispatchers and Murray-Calloway County Hospital emergency staff for their efforts the night of Hopkins’ death.

Funeral arrangements will be released once available from the family.

Hopkins’ end of watch was recorded as Aug. 31, 2025.
