WEST FRANKFORT, Ill., (KBSI) — More than 2,200 vehicles visited Candy Cane Lane over the weekend, organizers said, as families flocked to one of Southern Illinois’ most beloved holiday traditions.

Located at West Frankfort Community Park, 1100 E. Cleveland St., Candy Cane Lane is a free walk-through and drive-through Christmas display featuring more than 100,000 sparkling lights, over 500 characters and 90 scenes inspired by Disney, Universal and other popular holiday worlds.

The display was created in 1980 by longtime West Frankfort art teacher Tim Murphy, whose creativity and love of the season helped shape the attraction into a regional favorite. Many of Murphy’s former students contributed to the display over the years, helping it grows in size and scope.

Candy Cane Lane gained national attention in 2019 when it was featured on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight. After Murphy’s death in 2020 due to COVID-19, friends Iris and Bobby Kohzadi, along with a nonprofit committee, committed to preserving and expanding the display in his honor.

Organizers say the attraction continues to grow each year while keeping Murphy’s legacy of creativity, community and holiday joy alive.

Candy Cane Lane is open Sundays through Thursdays from 5 to 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays from 5 to 10 p.m. Families are encouraged to bring loved ones and enjoy the seasonal experience.
