Cape Girardeau announces Memorial Day events, schedule changes for holiday weekend

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Communities across Cape Girardeau are preparing to honor Memorial Day with ceremonies, historical events and tributes recognizing fallen service members.
City officials said many government offices will be closed Monday for the holiday. Trash and recycling pickup scheduled for Monday will run Tuesday, while Tuesday routes will move to Wednesday. All other routes will remain unchanged. Essential public safety and infrastructure services will continue operating.
Fort D Historic Site will host Memorial Day weekend events from Saturday through Monday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Organizers said local reenactors will honor veterans past and present, and the historic 1861 Woodruff cannon will be fired on Memorial Day. Admission is free.
The Avenue of Flags display is also on view at Cape County Park North through Memorial Day weekend. Organizers plan to remove the flags May 26, weather permitting.
An annual “March to the River” event is scheduled for Saturday, beginning at Cape County Park North and ending at the KC Hall. Organizers said the family-friendly event will include food and music honoring those who died in military service.
A Memorial Day service is planned Monday at the Osage Centre. A band performance will begin at 10:30 a.m., followed by the ceremony at 11 a.m.
Memorial Day is observed annually on the last Monday in May to honor U.S. military personnel who died while serving the country.
