Cape Girardeau Chamber endorses water system ballot measure

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau Area Chamber of Commerce is supporting a ballot measure that would allow the city to raise utility rates to invest in its water system.

The chamber’s board of directors voted to back the proposal, which would amend the city charter to allow annual rate increases of up to 15%, up from the current 5% limit.

The chamber says investing in the water system is crucial for maintaining a strong community and attracting businesses and residents.

The city council has asked voters to consider the proposal, citing the need for more flexibility in setting utility rates to cover operational costs and invest in infrastructure.

The chamber is encouraging its members to support the measure and inviting them to a Sept. 3 luncheon featuring Gov. Mike Kehoe.
