Cape Girardeau Citizens Police Academy a great turnout

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI)- Have you ever been interested in learning about your local police department?

“It’s not always a criminal setting that we’re visiting them.”

The Citizens Police Academy in Cape Girardeau started last week, and Officer Newton says they had more people sign up, than they could take.

“The citizens get to come in, learn a little bit about the community, and meet our officers face to face,” said Bobby Newton, Public Information Officer with the Cape Girardeau Police Department.

The free class offers personal insight into each division and lots of hands-on experience. The sessions last eight weeks and run about two hours each.

“They get to come in, actually get personable with us, and learn a little about us and what we do,” Newton added.

In addition to the scheduled classes, a “ride-along” with patrol officers will be made available to those wishing to take part.

Newton continues to say, “So it’s a great opportunity like I said to learn more about the department and be involved in your community and be able to give back to your community as well.”

Classes are full at this time, but don’t worry, you can get in on this experience later this coming fall.
