CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Cape Girardeau City Council voted to raise water/sewer rates in the city during the council’s meeting Monday night.

For an average bill which includes water, sewer, and trash, there will be an increase of about $5 from $92 to $97 per month.

For many, such as some apartments with no city trash, the average bill is $66 which will increase to $69.40.

This year’s rate increases will allow the city to meet its rate covenants for bonds previously issued by the sewer and water funds and support the operating needs of the sewer and water funds. It will help pay for water treatment and distribution, sewer collection and treatment, expenses such as personnel, supplies, and etc.

A basic sewer service charge will now be $14.48 per month. That is up from $13.79 per month. Plus, there are usage fees of $3.56/CCF (up from $3.39/CCF).

Water is billed with a flat cost plus usage fees. The flat cost is determined by the meter size. A typical home has a 5/8” meter. That flat monthly fee will increase from $9.88 to $10.37 and the usage rate will increase from $3.001/ccf to $3.151/ccf.

The change in the monthly private fire protection service charges fill from from $12.57 per month per less than 4 inch connection to $13.20.
