Cape Girardeau Community Responds to Two Shooting Incidents in the community
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Cape Girardeau police responded to two separate shooting-related incidents Monday, leading to community concerns about safety in the city.
The first incident occurred around 8 a.m. on Ranney Avenue, where officers were called after reports that someone had been shot. Authorities have not released further details about the victim or suspect.
Residents of the neighborhood, who wished to remain anonymous, shared their perspectives on the situation.
“I generally feel safe as long as we have ADT or some other security system,” one resident said. “But it’s not the first time, and it won’t be the last.”
Another resident talked about personal security measures, stating, “We have our security system here, we’ve got the dogs”
Less than 12 hours later, officers were called to a local hospital after a young boy was reportedly struck by a BB gun. Police say the incident took place near SEMO District Fair Drive, though further details remain unclear.
The incidents have sparked discussion among local residents, with some sharing their thoughts on our Now Local News app.
“I think we’re pretty much on par with any other city of our size in the United States,” one user, known as @christynewsone, commented. “Bad people are going to get a hold of weapons if they truly desire to, and they’re going to use them in committing crimes if they truly desire to. If they weren’t using a gun, they would be using a knife or another type of weapon.”
Another citizen journalist, @kathy_leimer86, said she believes gun-related incidents in Cape Girardeau are consistent with other trends.
“I personally don’t think it’s any more or less than it has been in the past,” she said. “You never know who’s carrying a gun. So obviously, we need to know our surroundings and be nice to others.”
Despite the recent incidents, many residents maintain that Cape Girardeau remains a safe community.
“Certainly getting better,” one Ranney Avenue resident said. “We definitely have a strong community. There are definitely people that look out for one another.”
Authorities have not provided updates on the suspects or arrests related to the incidents.
