Cape Girardeau completes critical water treatment plant repair, shifts focus to long-term improvements

City of Cape (KBSI)

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — City officials say the repair of Clarifier 1 at the Cape Rock Water Treatment Plant is complete, addressing the most pressing threat to local water capacity this year.

However, the city is now focusing on preventative maintenance and long-term infrastructure improvements due to ongoing failures in the water treatment and distribution system.

Assistant City Manager Trevor Pulley emphasized that while water quality meets or exceeds state and national standards, the system’s ability to produce a sustainable volume of clean water is increasingly strained.

The unexpected failure of Clarifier 1 last month reduced water production at the plant from 7.95 million gallons per day to 4.95 million gallons per day.

City officials say multiple crews and specialists have been working to address the issue, and contractors are now assessing Clarifier 2 for potential future repairs.

Despite progress, infrastructure challenges persist. City leaders are refining funding strategies for critical infrastructure upgrades, including the addition of a fourth clarifier and basin.
