Cape Girardeau County officials urge residents to check for home fire hazards

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — The Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office is reminding residents to check their homes for potential fire hazards and take steps to prevent fires.

The sheriff’s office shared fire safety recommendations Monday from the Gordonville Fire Protection District.

Officials recommend limiting distractions while cooking and never leaving a hot oven or stovetop unattended. Flammable items, including dish towels and wooden utensils, should be kept away from stovetops.

Residents are also encouraged to unplug small appliances, such as toasters, toaster ovens and slow cookers, when they are not in use.

Candles should be kept at least 12 inches away from anything that can burn and should be extinguished before leaving a room or going to sleep.

Officials also recommend keeping matches and lighters out of the reach and sight of children.

People using fireplaces should burn only dry, seasoned wood and avoid burning trash.
