CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Cape Girardeau County officials announced Tuesday the launch of a major improvement project at North Park Lake, aimed at enhancing recreation, safety and sustainability.

The project will reduce the size of the lake to better align with the natural watershed, stabilize eroding shorelines, and prepare the west side of the lake for the relocation of Shelters 4 and 5. Plans also include construction of a new playground, restroom facility, and a parking lot with space for about 200 vehicles and dedicated bus parking.

“The North Park Lake project is a major step forward for park sustainability and visitor experience,” said Parks Director Bryan Sander. “By resizing the lake to reflect natural water flow and strengthening the banks, we protect both the landscape and the long-term usability of the park. At the same time, relocating the shelters and adding modern amenities will make Cape County Park safer, more accessible and more enjoyable for families and groups.”

Work will be phased to minimize disruption for park users. Erosion control and bank stabilization will come first, followed by regrading on the west side of the lake to accommodate the relocated shelters and amenities. The new playground will meet modern safety standards and be situated near the restrooms and expanded parking area to create a centralized, accessible activity hub.

To help maintain access during construction, the county has arranged for a temporary entrance via Limbaugh Lane through a partnership with a neighboring property owner. Officials say this additional access will ease traffic flow and reduce interruptions to scheduled activities and shelter rentals.

The Park Department said it will provide periodic updates as work progresses and is encouraging residents to remain patient during the construction phase.
