Cape Girardeau County SROs welcome students back to Nell Holcomb School

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo., (KBSI) — Students and staff at Nell Holcomb School kicked off the new school year with some help from the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff’s Office.

School Resource Officer Sgt. Heather VanGennip joined students and staff for the first day of school Tuesday, along with new Superintendent Dr. Sonia Wood and Principal Mike Wortmann.

The sheriff’s office shared photos of VanGennip and school administrators testing out playground equipment, joking that the first-day checklist included inspecting the monkey bars and swings.

While the photos were lighthearted, the sheriff’s office said they also highlighted the relationships school resource officers build with students and staff through everyday interactions.

The sheriff’s office wished Nell Holcomb students and staff a safe, successful and enjoyable school year.
