Cape Girardeau, Pope counties under no burn advisory

CAPE GIRARDEAU COUNTY, Mo. (KBSI) – Cape Girardeau County in Missouri is under a no burn advisory. Pope County in Illinois is under an open fire burn ban.

The Cape Girardeau County Commissioners voted on Sept. 29 to approve a no burn advisory for Cape Girardeau County effective immediately. The no burn advisory recommends no burning of any kind including open burning and recreation burning. The burn advisory will be in place until the drought like conditions improve.

Those driving or working outdoors are asked to be extremely careful to discard smoking materials. Campers and hunters are also asked to be extremely careful.

Pope County has experienced about three field fires in the past few days. Sheriff Suits, the Pope County government, city of Golconda, Rural Pope County Fire District and the Shawnee National Forest Service are in agreement that a burn order is necessary. Residents are asked if they are aware of anyone setting any fires to call the sheriff’s office at 618-683-4321.
