Cape Girardeau launches new text alert system for residents
CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — Cape Girardeau residents now have a new way to receive critical city updates in real time, thanks to the help of theTextMyGov alert system.
City Manager Dr. Kenny Haskins kick started the initiative nearly nine months ago, aiming to improve communication between local government and the community. Now, the system is officially ready for public use.
“Well, this is all about communication,” Haskins said. “Being able to reach out and essentially touch someone with a message from the city about what we’re doing, how their government is working, is probably one of the most effective tools out there. That’s why we’ve embraced it.”
The TextMyGov system allows residents to receive instant notifications about important city updates, including emergency alerts, and public safety announcements. Signing up is simple, citizens can text “CAPE” to 91896, a process that takes less than 30 seconds.
Local resident Philip Francis praised the new system, saying it will be especially beneficial for those who may not regularly check social media or watch the news.
“I’m pretty active on social media, so I see updates fairly quickly,” Francis said. “But for my family members or older folks who aren’t as active on smartphones, this is a great way to keep them informed.”
Haskins says that the alert system is free and allows users to opt in or out at any time.
