CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A Cape Girardeau man was arrested late Dec. 31 after police responded to reports of gunfire in the 500 block of South Frederick Street, authorities said.
An officer parked near the 500 block of South Sprigg Street at about 11:58 p.m. reported hearing several gunshots coming from South Frederick Street and began responding to the area. At the same time, the officer received a ShotSpotter alert indicating shots had been fired in the 500 block of South Frederick.
Officers arrived and made contact with occupants of a vehicle at the scene. During the investigation, a man later identified as Dejuan McClung, 39, of Cape Girardeau, approached officers and was instructed to remain back while they continued their investigation.
While officers were on scene, they reported hearing additional gunfire to the south. After the shots stopped, McClung told officers that he had been firing a weapon, police said.
McClung was detained, and a search of his person led to the discovery of a plastic bag containing about one gram of suspected cocaine. Officers also found spent shell casings near the residence McClung was seen exiting when police arrived.
McClung was taken into custody and charged through the Cape Girardeau County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office with possession of a controlled substance, a Class D felony, and unlawful discharge of a firearm, a Class A misdemeanor. He was issued a $15,000 cash or surety bond.
No injuries or property damage were reported. Authorities noted that charges are accusations and that McClung is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
