Cape Girardeau man charged after shots fired incident

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) — A Cape Girardeau man has been charged after police responded to a shots fired incident early Thursday morning.

According to the Cape Girardeau Police Department, an officer was patrolling near the 1900 block of New Madrid Street at about 1 a.m. when he heard multiple gunshots. The officer immediately radioed other officers, who responded to the area.

Police said the officer quickly located a vehicle leaving the area at a high rate of speed. Officers conducted a felony traffic stop and detained the driver.

Investigators identified the driver as 21-year-old Harlanso Thomas of Cape Girardeau. According to police, Thomas admitted to firing a gun following an altercation.

Officers recovered a firearm from the vehicle. Thomas was arrested and charged with one count of unlawful use of a weapon, a Class B felony.

Thomas is being held on a $15,000 cash-only bond.

The investigation remains ongoing.

Thomas is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
