1 injured, suspect in custody after shots fired in Cape Girardeau

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – One person was injured and a suspect is in custody after shots were fired and a foot chase with police Tuesday afternoon in Cape Girardeau.

Michael Dewayne Thompkins faces charges of assault 1st degree or attempt – serious physical injury or special victim, armed criminal action and resisting/interfering with arrest for a felony.

Cape Girardeau Police Public Information Officer Ptlm. Bobby Newton says they received a call of a shooting in the 800 block of Sheridan on April 23.

A person told Cape Girardeau police that Thompkins shot him when he opened the door to an apartment.

Thompkins told police he went to the apartment because the mother of his child was visiting there.

He told police the victim was there and that he had been having problems with him. Thompkins told police he put a ski mask on before knocking on the door.

Cape Girardeau Police Public Information Officer Ptlm. Bobby Newton says shortly after the shooting, there was a chase with a suspect and shots were fired. He says no one was injured.

Thompkins told police he threw the gun in the woods after the shooting. As of April 23, the gun had not been recovered.

Police are investigating.
