CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – The Cape Girardeau police department is seeking help identifying a subject, posting this image onto the departments Facebook page in order to try to get help from the community.

Public Information Officer Bobby Newton said the department often relies on community support when working cases like these especially when surveillance footage is utilized.

“Each business handles incidents differently, but the first step is always to contact us,” Newton said. “Providing photos or video can be incredibly helpful for the investigation.”

Newton says that when a business suspects a theft or encounters someone of interest, they often submit surveillance materials to law enforcement. If officers are unable to identify the person internally, the department turns to social media and other public platforms to ask for help.

“In some cases, the person may simply be a witness,” Newton said. “We’re not always dealing with a suspect we just need to speak with them.”

Newton also advised local businesses not to confront individuals directly if something happens.

“If someone is believed to be involved in a crime, it’s best not to approach them,” he said. “Contact us immediately if they’re still on the premises, and try to gather useful information like a physical description, vehicle details, or the direction they left in.”

Despite this, Newton says that local businesses remain safe and encouraged the public to continue supporting them.

“Absolutely, go out and support your local shops,” he said. “They’re the backbone of the community.”

Anyone with information about the individual in question are encouraged to contact the Cape Girardeau Police Department through whatever method they’re most comfortable with.
