CARUTHERSVILLE, Mo., (KBSI) — Cape Girardeau Public Schools announced it will not participate in its scheduled football game Friday, Oct. 16, citing safety concerns.

District officials said the decision was made out of an abundance of caution to protect students, staff and families.

“The safety and well-being of our students and staff will always be our top priority,” the district said in a statement. “After careful consideration, we believe this decision is in the best interest of our students, staff, and families.”

The district acknowledged the decision may disappoint student-athletes, coaches, families and supporters but said the safety of the school community remains its top priority.

Officials did not provide details about the specific safety concerns that prompted the decision.

The announcement did not provide a reason for the cancellation.
