Cape Girardeau seeks public input on future tourism projects

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — Cape Girardeau residents will have two opportunities in October to weigh in on how the city should invest in future tourism projects.
The city will hold public input meetings from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at the Osage Centre and from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, at City Hall.
Both meetings will be held in an open-house format, allowing residents to stop by, suggest projects, ask questions and review proposals being considered.
“We want to hear from the community about what gets them to visit cities like Cape Girardeau, and what else we could do to bring more tourists to town,” Parks and Recreation Director Doug Gannon said.
Tourism projects are funded through the city’s restaurant tax, which has helped fund projects including the Cape Girardeau SportsPlex. According to the city, the SportsPlex attracts more than 39,000 visitors to Cape Girardeau each year.
City officials said the public input will help determine which potential project could provide the greatest return on investment for local businesses and residents.
The Cape Girardeau City Council must approve a final recommendation by Jan. 4, 2027, for a proposal to potentially go before voters as early as April 2027.
