CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (KBSI) – While millions of fans watched the FIFA World Cup from home, one Cape Girardeau resident had the chance to experience it in person.

Sean Harold traveled to Kansas City to attend the Netherlands’ group stage match against Tunisia, describing the atmosphere as unlike anything he had ever experienced.

Harold said the event brought together tens of thousands of fans from around the world, creating an environment filled with celebration and camaraderie.

“It was once in a lifetime,” Harold said. “You’re never going to see something like that, especially in our state.”

He said one of his favorite memories was seeing fans singing, dancing and celebrating together before and after the match.

“We had like 36,000 people in the street,” Harold said. “You’re dancing and singing and having the time of your life.”

Beyond the soccer itself, Harold said the experience reinforced the power of sports to bring people together.

“I think sports does so much good for people,” he said. “It really unifies in a way that nothing else does. And for me, that’s what it’s all about. That’s sports.”

Harold said he’ll continue following the remainder of the World Cup from home after experiencing what he calls a once-in-a-lifetime event in Kansas City.
