Cape Girardeau student earns Congressional Award Gold Medal

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) — A Cape Girardeau student has earned the Congressional Award Program Gold Medal, the program’s highest honor for young Americans.

U.S. Rep. Jason Smith announced Friday that Matthew Austin of Cape Girardeau received the honor.

Austin graduated as valedictorian of Notre Dame Regional High School and earned a perfect score on the ACT. He also completed more than 400 hours of community service, qualified for state competition through Future Business Leaders of America and became an Eagle Scout.

Austin is now attending Northwestern University.

“Congratulations, Matthew — Southeast Missouri is proud of you!” Smith said in announcing the achievement.
