CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo., (KBSI) – Prop L is a ballot measure that will be decided on April 8, 2025, by voters living in the municipal library district of Cape Girardeau. The proposition seeks to continue a dedicated library tax that was initially approved in 2007 to fund the construction of the current library building.

The tax is set to expire in 2027, and the proposed continuation aims to ensure the library’s building is properly maintained and its services are enhanced to meet the community’s needs. If approved, Prop L would allow the Cape Girardeau Public Library to maintain its current tax rate without an increase beyond 2027.

Here are the strategic priorities that Prop L aims to address:

Maintenance and Updates: Ensure the library facility remains safe and well-maintained, including essential upkeep, repairs, and updates.
Expanded Services: Enhance library services, such as new programming, digital resources, and community initiatives.
Sustained Access: Maintain access to technology, educational resources, and public spaces.

Prop L would also support various community benefits, including:

Outreach Efforts: Expand outreach efforts through initiatives like a bookmobile and other community-based services.

Library Facilities: Operate and maintain safe, welcoming, and well-kept library facilities.

Programs and Partnerships: Offer enhanced programs for all ages, build stronger partnerships with local organizations, and expand access to digital collections and online resources.
