Cape splash reopens, but some attractions still await a green light

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo.(KBSI) — While Cape Splash has officially reopened its doors to the public, some of its most popular slides remain closed, leaving many guests wondering when the park will be fully operational again.

“We’ve had some good crowds this week,” said Robert Shanahan, aquatic facility supervisor at Cape Splash. “But we’re still not fully operational. Our slides are still down, but we’re hoping to get those up, hopefully in the next week.”

Shanahan said the delay is due to pending insurance approvals. Once those are finalized, the slides will reopen to the public.

“We know a lot of people are really anticipating the slides,” he said. “They want them back open so they can come enjoy the park the way they always have.”

The water park has long been a summer staple for families in Cape Girardeau and beyond.

“It’s a huge part of the season here,” Shanahan said. “For many families and kids, coming to Cape Splash is just part of their summer routine. We get season pass holders from out of town who come at least once or twice every year.”

Despite the limited attractions, Shanahan said the park is moving toward a “new normal” following recent storm damage.

“Hopefully, in the next couple of weeks, we’ll be about as normal as we were before the tornado,” he said. “We’re really excited to get back to that sense of comfort for the community.”

Shanahan credited the Cape Girardeau Parks and Recreation Department and maintenance crews for their quick work in making the park operational again in a hurry.

“They’ve worked incredibly hard over the last two weeks getting repairs done and making sure everything is safe,” he said.

Above all, Shanahan says that safety remains their top priority as they continue the reopening process.
