Carbondale accepting nominations for 21st annual Historic Preservation Awards

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale Preservation Commission is accepting nominations for the 21st annual Historic Preservation Awards.
Any property located within Carbondale city limits is eligible for an award. Residents are encouraged to nominate properties they believe deserve recognition, including their own.
Nominations will be accepted in five categories:
- Preservation: Buildings maintained in their original architectural style and used for their original purpose.
- Restoration: Properties restored to their original style or appearance.
- Sympathetic Addition: Additions to existing structures that are consistent with the original architectural style.
- Compatible New Construction: New structures that match the architectural style of the neighborhood or use historic building materials and techniques.
- Adaptive Reuse: Existing buildings repurposed for uses other than their original design.
Award recipients will be recognized at a City Council meeting in May in conjunction with National Preservation Month.
Nomination forms are available at the Planning Services Division office at City Hall or online through the Historic Preservation Awards Program. Applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2026.
