CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale has been awarded nearly $2 million in state funding to repave three major streets, a project that will be completed with no cost to the city or its residents.
The $1,989,063 grant, awarded through Illinois’ largest-ever infrastructure program, will fully fund resurfacing of:
West College Street from South Forest Avenue to South University Avenue
West Cherry Street from South Oakland Avenue to South Illinois Avenue
Poplar Street from West Mill Street to West Oak Street
City Manager Stan Reno said the investment will improve safety, enhance roadways and support quality of life in Carbondale.
“By fully funding these repaving projects, the State is helping us improve safety, enhance our roadways and support the quality of life for our residents and visitors,” Reno said. “This will all be done without placing a financial burden on our community.”
The resurfacing work is part of Gov. JB Pritzker’s statewide infrastructure initiative aimed at modernizing roads and supporting local economies. The city will release a project timeline as planning continues with the Illinois Department of Transportation.
