Carbondale Bikes! Winter Ride postponed to Feb. 21 due to weather

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale has postponed Saturday’s Carbondale Bikes! Winter Ride because of uncertain snow and ice conditions.

Officials said the inaugural group ride has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 21, with a 10 a.m. start. Organizers said the decision was made to prioritize participant safety.

Riders will gather in the community room at the Neighborhood Co-Op grocery store in the Murdale Shopping Center, where participants will be asked to sign a waiver. The ride will follow a 10- to 12-mile loop that includes the Saluki Greenway and Mud Line Bike Path.

About one mile of the route will be on an unpaved gravel surface, and organizers recommend a mountain or hybrid bike. Portions of the ride will take place on streets with moving traffic. Riders are encouraged to wear bright clothing and use bike lights. Helmets are required.

The ride will be led by city staff members and experienced cyclists Molly Maxwell and Brice Dion. Maxwell said the event is intended to highlight Carbondale’s growing network of bike paths and the city’s continued investment in alternative transportation and sustainability.

The event is a “no-drop” ride, meaning no participant will be left behind because of pace, mechanical issues or rest breaks. If additional inclement weather is forecast, a final decision will be announced through city communications by 5 p.m. the day before the ride.
