Carbondale firefighters respond to apartment complex fire

CARBONDALE, Ill. — The Carbondale Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a three-story apartment complex Saturday evening, officials said.
Fire crews were dispatched at about 7:25 p.m. Feb. 7 to a multi-unit apartment building. Upon arrival, firefighters located a fire outside a vacant lower-level apartment beneath a wooden exterior stairway and a second-floor wooden walkway that provided access to apartments above.
Crews had water on the fire within about five minutes of dispatch and quickly brought the blaze under control.
Two occupants were inside an apartment above the affected area at the time of the fire. Because the fire compromised their normal exit route, the occupants remained sheltered in place while staying in contact with fire personnel. Once conditions were deemed safe, they were evacuated within minutes without incident.
No injuries were reported. The displaced occupants were temporarily relocated.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The Carbondale Fire Department thanked the Jackson County Ambulance Service, the Murphysboro Fire Department and the Carbondale Police Department for their assistance at the scene.
