CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) – A Carbondale man has been arrested after police responded to a report of animal abuse last week, according to the City of Carbondale Police Department.

At approximately 8:55 p.m. on October 23, officers were called to the 400 block of North Oakland Street for a report of a dog being abused. A witness told police that the suspect, Remus R. Williams, 38, of Carbondale, had struck his dog multiple times with a stick.

During the investigation, officers found the injured dog and removed it from the residence. The Carbondale Animal Control Officer transported the animal to a local veterinarian, where medical staff determined the dog’s injuries were consistent with abuse rather than the explanation provided by Williams.

Officers later returned to the residence and arrested Williams on charges of cruel treatment of animals and animal torture. He was taken to the Jackson County Jail pending a bond hearing.

The investigation remains active. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Carbondale Police Department at (618) 549-2121.
