CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) — City leaders and community members gathered last week to celebrate the placement of a time capsule that is scheduled to remain sealed for the next 100 years.

The ceremony featured remarks from Carbondale Community High School District 165 Superintendent Daniel Booth, Southern Illinois University Alumni Association representative Molly Hudgins, City Manager Stan Reno and Mayor Carolin Harvey.

According to the City of Carbondale, the capsule contains items intended to preserve the community’s stories, history and aspirations for future generations.

City officials said they hope residents who open the capsule a century from now will gain a glimpse into what life was like in Carbondale in 2026.
