Carbondale PD catches package thief with the help of the Ring camera app

CARBONDALE, Ill. (KBSI) – On December 28, 2023 the Carbondale Police Department was alerted to a package theft around Washington and Hester Streets via the Ring Neighbors app.
The app allows Ring Doorbell and other private home surveillance system users in the same neighborhood to share videos with each other, as well as law enforcement, in order to raise awareness of issues or crimes that occur in the area.
Pictures of the suspect were sent to on duty police officers and detectives.
Officers later located a suspect wearing the same clothing and recovered the stolen items, which were returned to the victim.
The Neighbors app has proven to be a very effective tool in bringing neighbors together by sharing information and creating a sense of community, as well as increasing the chances for a successful criminal investigation when the need arises.
Subscribers to the Neighbors app are not required to notify or communicate with police, and police do not have access to anyone’s cameras or knowledge of the address or owner information unless it is provided by the owner.
