Carbondale Police respond to man waving knife at customers

CARBONDALE Il. (KBSI)- On March 14, 2024, at 11:18 p.m., City of Carbondale police officers responded to a business in the 500 block of East Main Street for a report of a male yelling at customers while brandishing a large knife.

Officers later located and identified Shiron D. Smith, 46 years old of Carbondale, in the 100 block of South Graham Street.

Smith initially complied with officers and stopped, but then attempted to flee on foot.

Smith ran for a brief moment before falling down. Smith refused the officers’ commands and efforts to place him in handcuffs.

Once he was taken into custody, officers found Smith was still in possession of a large knife.

Smith was also found to be in possession of a controlled substance.

Smith was charged with Unlawful Use of a Weapon, Disorderly Conduct, Possession of a Controlled Substance.

He was also found to be wanted on Jackson County Failure to Appear arrest warrants for prior charges of Resisting a Police Officer and Criminal Damage to Property.

Smith was incarcerated in the Jackson County Jail.
