Carbondale reminds property owners of snow, ice maintenance requirements

CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — The City of Carbondale issued a reminder to owners and managers of multi-unit residential properties about maintenance expectations during winter weather events.
City officials said Carbondale Revised Code 4-15-1 adopts the International Property Maintenance Code, which requires sidewalks, walkways, driveways, parking spaces and similar areas to be maintained in a safe condition and free from hazardous conditions.
For multi-unit residential properties, officials said the requirement includes parking lots and drive aisles used by residents and visitors. Snow and ice accumulation can become a concern when it creates slip or vehicle hazards, restricts access to parked vehicles, interferes with emergency access or limits accessible routes.
Property owners and managers are encouraged to take reasonable steps to reduce snow and ice hazards following winter weather events. Officials said mitigation may include plowing, salting, sanding or other appropriate measures. Full removal to bare pavement is not required, but timely and visible efforts are expected to help ensure safe access for residents, visitors and emergency services.
The notice was issued for informational purposes to promote safety and consistency across multi-unit residential properties.
