CARBONDALE, Ill., (KBSI) — Carbondale officials are reminding residents that political yard signs are permitted only on private property and are not allowed within the public right of way, in accordance with city code.
Under city ordinance 15.4.10.9.F, political signs are allowed throughout the city with size and placement restrictions. In residential districts, signs may be no larger than 6 square feet per side, with up to two sides permitted. In commercial districts, signs may be no larger than 32 square feet per side, also with up to two sides permitted.
The ordinance states that political signs may not be placed in the public right of way or in locations that obstruct visibility needed for safe vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Signs also may not be attached to utility poles, trees located in the public right of way, streetlight poles, traffic or street signs, or fire hydrants.
City officials said any political signs placed in the public right of way will be collected and stored by city staff. Owners may retrieve the signs by calling 618-457-3251. The city said enforcement is applied uniformly and is not based on candidates or political parties.
The public right of way generally includes the area immediately adjacent to roadways, such as the shoulder. Residents can verify right-of-way boundaries by consulting the Jackson County Supervisor of Assessments GIS map or by contacting the city’s Community Development office at 618-457-3251.
